installing an aluminium pergola
Hey folks, I’ve been toying with the idea of installing an aluminium pergola myself instead of hiring someone, mostly to save money and because I actually like getting my hands dirty with weekend projects. I’ve got a medium-sized garden and decent tools, but no experience with this kind of install. Has anyone here done it themselves? I’d love to hear how difficult it really is and whether it’s doable for someone who’s handy but not a pro.

I actually went through this exact thing last summer. Did it all by myself, and let me tell you — it’s totally doable if you plan it out in detail and have someone to help you hold up the heavier bits. I ordered an electric pergola system that came with pretty decent instructions (still, I had to pause and rewatch a few install videos multiple times to make sense of certain parts). Here's the exact kind of setup I used: https://closethedeal.co.uk/catalogs/electric-pergola
What I’d really emphasize is double-checking your patio surface before starting — mine wasn’t perfectly level, so I had to do some extra work with adjustable footings. Also, get yourself a proper torque wrench. I tried using a regular socket set at first and regretted it after stripping one of the bolts. Took me two afternoons, and I had to phone a buddy to help hold the louvres while I screwed them in. The wiring for the electric controls was actually the easiest part since they’re designed to be plug-and-play. Just keep in mind: wind can be your worst enemy mid-install. Pick a calm weekend!
